Message from Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon Chairman

Dear participant.

I would like to sincerely thank you for taking the bold step to take part in the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon. This year’s race will be held on Sunday 25th October 2015 at Nyayo National Stadium. It will be the 13th edition of the event which was first held in 2003. I am glad that our esteemed participants and partners have continued to share in our dream over the period.

Through your support, the marathon has continued to make a tremendous difference in the lives of thousands of children in Kenya. Last year we had an impressive turnout of 19,000 participants. We managed to raise a total of Kshs 28.3 million which surpassed the amount raised in the 2013 marathon by KShs 5.8 million. All funds raised from the event have been channelled towards ‘Seeing is Believing’ (SIB), Standard Chartered Bank’s global initiative aimed at combating avoidable blindness. In Kenya through the Nairobi Marathon, to date we have raised KShs 114.8 million. Through this initiative we have helped to restore sight to over 8,000 children in Kenya through various hospitals countrywide as well as purchased state-of-the-art equipment for the beneficiary hospitals, constructed and refurbished eye care health facilities, provided training for eye care medical personnel to increase their capacity and improve delivery of services.

Apart from the child eye care program, the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon has continued to contribute immensely in raising Kenya’s profile. The an annual event brings together runners, volunteers and supporters from all over the country as well as foreign participants. Indeed, the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon has become a “can’t miss” event.

It is through your support that we have managed to raise the profile of the marathon. It is worth noting that the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon is the only marathon in Kenya accredited by IAAF and is part of the 10 marathons sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank across the world. Your contributions make it possible for us to continuously improve the marathon year on year. I am glad that you are joining hands with us and making it possible to grow the marathon to reach international standards. We will continue to increase the level of investment in the marathon to enhance its profile to rival other big marathons including London, New York and Boston.

This year’s event will feature six race categories which are further divided along gender lines. These are;

  • 42km male and female
  • 21km male and female
  • 10km male and female
  • 21km wheelchair male and female
  • 5km Family Fun Run race
  • CEO Fun Run.

We have enriched the online registration experience to make it easier for all participants. This will be complimented by several registration outlets countrywide at Standard Chartered Branches, Supermarkets and Malls, Corporate partners and Health Clubs.

We are also happy to introduce you to our new product, the Marathon Savers Account, which has been specifically designed to reward marathon participants for their loyalty to the course. By opening the Marathon Savers Account, you will enjoy special interest rates on your deposits during this period.

Once again I would like to sincerely thank you for choosing to take part in the 2015 Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon.  We promise to deliver a memorable experience to all participants.

Thank you.
